Solana Name Service is the naming system that maps human-readable .sol domain names to Solana addresses, replacing long base58 public keys in wallets and applications. SNS is the network's token, used for governance of the registry. The service grew out of work originally maintained under the Bonfida name before moving to independent SNS branding.
How do .sol domains work?
A .sol domain is itself an on-chain account owned by the registrant, so it can be transferred, listed or used as an identity across Solana applications. Wallets that integrate the registry resolve a name to its underlying address at send time. Because ownership is recorded on Solana, transfers settle like any other on-chain transaction, with fees paid in SOL.
What is the SNS token used for?
The SNS token is tied to governance of Solana Name Service, giving holders a formal say in decisions about the registry and its treasury rather than acting as a fee token for registrations. Its tokenomics are published in the project's documentation. Governance tokens of this kind separate control of a protocol from the day-to-day cost of using it.
