What is Serum (SRM)?
Serum was a decentralised exchange protocol on Solana built around a central limit order book, launched in 2020. SRM is its token, issued both as a Solana SPL token and as an ERC-20 contract on Ethereum. Serum's design was notable for putting a full order book on chain rather than using an automated market maker.
What is a central limit order book DEX?
Instead of pricing trades against a liquidity pool, a central limit order book matches individual bids and asks, as traditional exchanges do. Serum ran this on chain, which was practical on Solana because of its low fees and fast confirmation. The trade-off against automated market makers is that order books need active market makers to stay liquid.
What happened to Serum after 2022?
Serum was closely associated with FTX and Alameda Research, and after FTX's collapse in late 2022 the protocol's upgrade authority was considered compromised. The Solana community forked the open-source code into OpenBook, which took over as the actively maintained order book, while Serum's own development largely stopped.
